POWERLESS, BUT NOT INACTIVE

The Ukrainians are experiencing the ruthless brutality of the Putin regime. His system of power is based solely on oppression. The government has largely detached itself from its own people and is using dictatorial control of all media to maintain its own power. The military threat to the entire world from Russia is so overwhelming that the international community must watch the inhumane war of annihilation. Economic sanctions can only build up pressure in the medium term. World politics is trying to keep the war limited locally to Ukraine. Only Putin himself can end this war. For the moment, the people affected, parents and especially children, need all of our support. Everyone can make a contribution and there are many initiatives.

If a large-scale war in other European countries can be prevented, joint friendship projects with Ukrainians and Russians must shape the coming decades. Putin cannot remain president forever, but the Putin system is firmly embedded in all state organizations. Together we must manage to offer the young Russian generation a perspective in the Western world, to make them addicted to democratic freedom in Europe. Only then will a friendly, neighborly coexistence emerge again over time. Culture and we cultural workers can make a major contribution here.
